Jaisalmer Fort
The Golden City of Jaisalmer comes to life

Jaisalmer was founded in the 12th century by
Rawal Jaisal of the Bhatti Tribe and is famous for its fort. The Golden City
derives its name from the yellow sandstone that was used to build the State
Fort and homes of Old Town, causing them all to cast a golden glow. Some 4,000
people still live within Jaisalmer Fort, accounting for more than one-quarter
of the city's population. Jain temples and Gadisar Lake, with its beautiful
cenotaphs are also other historical spots within the city.
Udaipur City Palace
Rajasthan's most beautiful destination is the
City of Lakes. The capital of the Mewar kingdom, Udaipur was founded in the
16th century by Maharana Udai Singh II who later moved his court there from
neighboring Chittorgarh. Palaces: The city is bordered by seven lakes and the
Aravalli mountain range.

The Blue City: Mehrangarh Fort dominates
Rajasthan's second-biggest city. It is the mightiest stronghold built during
this era of warring clans. Jodhpur abounds with palaces, citadels, and
cenotaphs planted among luxuriant gardens, but that colorful blue is what gives
it its name.
In 1459, Rao Jodha (the founder of the Marwar
Kingdom and city of Jodhpur) erected one of India's largest and best-preserved
forts: Mehrangarh. Fort, located 410 feet above the city on a rocky ledge with
walls and gates shielding it. The many palaces, courtyards, and temples within
the fort are accompanied by cannons of all sizes. From above one has a
marvelous view down on the blue-clad city below.
The seven gates of entry, two of which — Jayapol
and Fattehpol — were constructed to celebrate military victories by each prior
emperor. It's about a 300-meter trek up through the hills from the Old City to
Mehrangarh. If you feel lazy, an autorickshaw will take you up the twisting
route.
